It’s not long before the film’s pessimism kicks in and we’re all reminded of how terrible human beings are. Just watch how quickly, and without warrant, everyone in Dead House becomes an unbelievable turd by the time the credits roll. Well, to be fair, two of them manage to maintain their innocence, but they end up dead, so what use is that to them now?

The Imperial House is described as “among the finest, most desirable white glove co-operatives combining elegance and service” by realtors. Things certainly pick up once the basement dwellers throw down their shackles and start trying to eat everyone. Clearly a film with a low budget, Dead House still manages to have some impressive and gruesome prosthetics. And as the film winds up, there’s some good old-fashioned carnage to enjoy. Esther’s crow familiar, Monty, is transformed into a human to keep tabs on the Dead Boy Detectives.

Carly/Kaitlyn is sent to Elmbridge where Carly makes friends with a spiritual girl named Naida. Naida believes that both personalities are real and that they're two souls in one body.

The makeup on them, and the mutant creature that turns up near the end, is impressive. Granted, there’s also the usual CGI blood spray but, it’s nice to see real effects getting extensive use. Set in the same universe as DC Comics’ The Sandman, the series follows the ghosts of Charles and Edwin, two boys who suffered terrible deaths at a British boarding school 70 years apart.

If that sounds like your cup of tea, then you are in for a treat. For everyone else, like me, you might be wanting a bit more to chew on. On the downside, nobody in this film is really likeable, which makes it hard to care if they live or die.
