Weekend cruises have been growing in popularity over the past few years. In the old days, cruise lines mostly offered 7 day or longer itineraries. While some short cruises were available, they were usually on older ships that hadn’t been updated in years without much to do onboard.

By the third day, we became pretty acquainted with the party atmosphere onboard. It was nice to feel like we didn’t need to impress anyone - certainly, no one was judging what we were wearing or how we looked. Here’s an overview of my experience onboard a weekend Carnival cruise. On the entertainment side of things, Carnival Liberty features two of our best, live on stage. First there's Playlist Productions™, where pros sing and dance their hearts out, performing high-energy themed revues of tunes you know, backed by amazing visual effects.

When we boarded the ship, we learned pretty quickly that most of our preconceived notions were fairly accurate. While it wasn’t as crazy as I had anticipated in my mind, the energy onboard was off the charts. Although an older crowd can be slower-paced, at least they are very quiet and considerate onboard. By the last morning, I had to sleep with earplugs if I had any hope of feeling rested in the morning.
It’s nice to not have so much time, where I just constantly look at deck plans, dining menus, and excursion lists to plan what I’ll do. The Carnival Sunrise technically debuted in 2019, but in reality, the ship was in service before as the Carnival Triumph. It went through a $200 million dollar retrofit that was so extensive, Carnival saw fit to rename the ship.

Carnival Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean all offer three-night Bahamas cruises from Florida to Nassau and/or the line's private island. Departure ports include Miami, Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale. It also seems like similar events on other cruise lines are normally held late on other cruise lines. If you want to find fun music or go to the silent disco party, you will have to stay up pretty late. The earlier slots are reserved to appeal to the older cruisers and they assume the younger ones will stay up late. But, people only had four days to dance and drink their vacation away, so they weren’t wasting any time.
With 27 ships and hundreds of itineraries, there’s a Carnival cruise for everyone. These short trips are also a great way to rack up points toward elite status on your favorite cruise line, especially if you book a suite that earns you extra points. Weekend cruises have many benefits, the obvious one being they do not require missing much school or work. They're more affordable than a longer cruise, so they can be great for folks on a budget.
Carnival Panorama is smaller than today's mega-ships, but it packs a ton of fun into its 15 decks. Rooms are spacious; some come with exclusive perks like access to the Havana Pool area or unlimited use of the spa’s thermal suites. Kids will also love that there’s an onboard waterpark, kids club, and a Build-a-Bear Workshop at Sea. Carnival Luminosa (formerly the Costa Luminosa) is for you if you want to sail to destinations like Alaska and Australia.
However, the culture is shifting, with younger workers not wanting to dedicate a whole week of valuable vacation days to one trip. Instead, they prefer multiple, shorter vacations over the weekend. Royal Caribbean took the lead in observing this trend and changing their offerings. They started offering a variety of 3, 4, and 5-night cruises on some of their recently “amplified,” their word for updated, ships. These ships have everything the “stars” of their fleet have; the newest restaurants, bars, attractions like the Flow Rider, etc. What could be better than setting sail for a Memorial Day cruise from New York, the quintessential American city?

If you're looking to hop a ship for a few nights, you can't just sail from anywhere to anywhere. Ships need to call in another country before heading back – which limits where you can sail on a weekend cruise. A little research revealed that this cruise was on the oldest ship in Carnival’s fleet. To my surprise, Carnival Ecstasy would be retiring and heading to the scrapyard in just a few months.
Finally, weekend cruising is a great way to get out of my day-to-day life and escape reality for a bit. Vacation really is a state of mind and sailing away from the stress of daily life is a perfect way for me to reset. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love a week-long cruise to really disconnect and get away. I even love night cruises for grand adventures, which allows me to see multiple countries without ever having to re-pack my suitcase. Sail away for a short two, three, or four day vacation on a cruise. It’s affordable, won’t cut into your workload and planning a short cruise makes you the hero of your family.
My favorite spot to hang out was the aft Patio Pool because it wasn't ever super crowded, and the view of the ocean was unmatched. If you need to fly or drive many hours to your departure port, you're looking at more of a long weekend with a day or two of time off from work required. However, if you have a flexible schedule or work off hours, a weekend cruise is definitely doable.
