Not even offering a bag of peanuts for free for a 4 hours flight is ridiculous. Myers to Philly (not the other way around). It was impossible to change a carry-on for a checked bag after the initial selection. The flight was delayed 14 hours "to allow for a late arriving aircraft." The seats were shockingly uncomfortable. This was only the second time I've seen seats that didn't recline in an airline. The first was in an East Bloc airline before the fall if the Iron Curtain. We were directed to go to a gate across from our gate. The plane wasn't there yet so we had to wait for it to arrive, then deplane everyone and then wait again for the plane to be cleaned.

The weight limit per bag was really low - 40 lbs - so we had to pay extra. Then, they said their carry on size was 14x18x8, and we measured our bag very carefully. It was within the limit, yet they said it was too big, so we ended up paying an extra $100 for that too!! So it wasn’t the cheap flight we thought it would be.

When I got to the boarding gate the agent was rude asking why I had a backpack - I said I added it - even had an orange tag on it. She ripped my tag off and swung her monitor around to show me how she was right- saying it isn’t wasn’t listed - only a checked bag. I explained again that I wasn’t sure what the issue was but I wouldn’t have an orange tag if I hadn’t added it. Then she finally checked my husband’s boarding pass and found that the agent at checkin had added my carryon to his boarding pass instead of mine. She sent me on my way without my orange tag. Was a bit embarrassing for me the tone she used with me assuming I was trying to get away with something.

Needless to say I don’t see myself flying frontier ever again. There was only room for a quarter of the passengers to sit at the gate at MCO. The gate attendant allowed people who did not require assistance to board early before they realized and started to turn people back.

You can even find prices in September for less than $120, as users have found deals to Orlando Sanford Intl Airport from as low as $36. The month of December appears to be one of the more expensive times to travel to Orlando Sanford Intl Airport from Charlotte. Flying in the targeted month can save you up to 43%. My daughter dropped her cell phone right through the crack between walkway and plane.

Check in easy, price very good, no frills flying tho! Pay for Every item once seat is paid for so do the math with baggage fees and carry on fees. Knew there was weather, and were notified of 20 min delayed, and then suddenly canceled. Thankfully full refund and appreciate that. I appreciate discounted airline but felt they could've done more for customer inconvenience.

And, if you're just looking for a little boost of happiness, grab Joyphoria. The first thing I noticed about the products was the packaging. Each bottle is housed in a box that looks similar to a book, and you can open the front flap to reveal the fragrance and a mini story that goes with it. The shape is similar to a potion bottle with a stopper on top.

Reviews

While my favorite scents were Joyphoria and Magic Energy, my least favorites might end up being your favorites. Although I would like to have more sex and increase my feelings of love, unfortunately, those weren't the scents that spoke to me. I felt most drawn to Joyphoria and Magic Energy, so I typically rotate the two of those into my scent routine. I spritz on my wrists, the back of my neck, down my shirt, and in my hair.

Recent Color Story

Charlotte Tilbury Cosmic Rocks Hypnotising Pop Shot Eyeshadow ($34.00 for 0.04 oz.) has a darker, grayish base that was packed with an intense, duochrome shimmer that shifted from bluish-teal to purple. I might call it a weak multichrome if pressed, but it seemed to shift between two shades that simply offered more of a gradient between those two shades than having three distinctive shifts. Christine Mielke is the editor-in-chief and has been reviewing products for over 14 years. Charlotte’s Magic Serum Crystal Elixir is enriched with vitamin C to help brighten the skin to restore a youthful complexion. It’s best when used before Charlotte’s Magic Cream, so we recommend swiping both before the 20%-off sale ends. Charlotte Tilbury Diamond Eyes Hypnotising Pop Shot Eyeshadow ($34.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a light, peachy gold with strong, warm undertones and a sparkling, high-shine metallic finish. Many of the products in the advent calendar have become TikTok famous, including the beauty light wand and the pillow talk mascara. A quick search for viral Charlotte Tilbury products on TikTok reveals the search term has 458.8 million views. These are truly perfect eyeshadows with full opacity and a silky smooth gleam to them.

Charlotte Tilbury The Pillow Talk Diamonds Lip Kit, $54, original price: $90

For those who can’t get enough of buttery eyeshadow palettes, flawless foundations, and colorful blushes, it’s vital to take advantage of beauty sales to control this costly obsession. Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk Lip Cheat has been receiving worldwide acclaim since its initial launch and is, without a doubt, a beauty industry staple. With its velvety and match-all formula, it’s skin-shade versatile and glides atop the lips to make them look fuller and give them that perfect, punchy pout. In fact, the brand’s keen eye to whipping out glowy skin-ready makeup products is virtually unmatched. The Bigger, Brighter Eye Tricks kit comes with a palette, an Eyes to Mesmerise liquid eyeshadow in the shade of your choice and one classic eyeliner. Amp up your eyes with Charlotte Tilbury Hypnotising Pop Shot. Experience highly-pigmented eye shadow textures that offer a sparkling sheen or duochrome wet effect. The dazzling diamond-inspired, pigmented pops of color are housed in jewel-embellished packaging. There's even a scent that promises to help you have more sex, aptly named "More Sex." The average rating based on all reviewed shade(s) in this formula is shown below. In August, Tilbury introduced her new Magic Water Cream. The new water-based moisturizer aims to provide 100 hours of hydration, reduce pore size and even skin tone. You can’t complete your Pillow Talk look without the brand’s Lip Cheat — another viral product. Some opt to fill in their entire lip area with this, while others prefer an outline pre-lipstick.

Tapping into cream blush territory, it couldn’t be easier to apply for a buildable glow. These are stunning offerings from CT – I’m quite drawn to the Emerald shade – which is quite a different emerald than most and the Smokey Quartz. Even though they are expensive, at least they are good quality products. Create the perfect makeup canvas with this set of Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Foundation, Magic Away Liquid Concealer and Wonderglow Face Primer to keep it all in place.

You are never fully dressed without a smile… and some lipstick if you’re a makeup lover. The brand also has a fragrance finder that can help you make a choice you'll love. As with any fragrance, the choice is extremely personal. How something smells to me will more than likely smell different to you.

To start, the new fragrance line, called Charlotte's Fragrance Collection of Emotions, wasn't just about beauty — it was science. Tilbury worked with a team from International Flavors and Fragrance (IFF) and used the company's Scentcube AI algorithm to combine ingredients that the brand says help boost certain emotions. Want to feel more powerful when walking into a meeting at work?

It also helps reduce the appearance of dark circles. Charlotte’s Magic Cream’s was originally created backstage to quickly prep and transform the look of models’ skin before fashion shows. Now, it’s loved by celebrities and supermodels and is is infused with what Charlotte calls “a magic matrix of oils.” According to the brand, one Magic Cream is sold every minute.

Big surprise – I really like Smokey Quartz and Emerald Eyes but I have dupes for both. I find that price for a single shadow just a bit too rich for my blood. They are $41 here in Canada (EACH!) which isn’t as bit a mark up over the US prices as I was expecting but it’s just more than I want to spend for a single eyeshadow. Charlotte Tilbury Smokey Quartz Hypnotising Pop Shot Eyeshadow ($34.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a light-medium taupe-brown with subtle, warm undertones and a lightly sparkling, metallic sheen. For a combination of lip and eye products, consider this kit that comes with the Luxury Palette of Pops in “Celestial Eyes,” a mini eye smudger brush and your choice of a Lip Cheat lip liner and Lip Lustre lip gloss.

Either way, it deserves a spot in your makeup bag and worth adding to your cart during the 20% site-wide discount. I didn’t want to like these because they’re singles. My single eye shadows (looking at you Chantecaille) don’t get enough love because I’m always reaching for an eye shadow palette. I may get one but they aren’t on the Sephora site yet. This mystery box is the one exception in the sale that is actually 50% off! It includes seven secret bestselling products for the price of $164.

They had moderate glide, which helped them adhere to the lid without absolutely having to have a tacky base or be paired with an adhesive spray (like MAC Fix+), though the latter helped minimize fallout over time. The products applied evenly and blended out well without too much fallout. Without a tacky base, they lasted for eight hours with light to moderate fallout (depending on the shade).

Duplicate a high-end product or never buy the same shade twice.

The brand launched a limited-edition fragrance in 2016, but the new collection was supposed to be entirely different. Founded in 1877, Inglis specializes in services to adults with severe neurodegenerative physical disabilities resulting in paraplegia and quadriplegia. After some years of inattention, University horticulturalist Charles Jenkins put the gardens back into shape, restoring them to their former glory. This only adds to the splendor of the estate and makes it a real hidden treasure in Ann Arbor. In the 1920s the farmlands were subdivided for development and the "back seven acres" with the best view was chosen by James Inglis as the site of his grand country home. With his wife Elizabeth, who designed the elaborate formal gardens, they created a country estate almost fit for royalty.

What's the housing market like in Northeast LA?

As Mrs. Spicer described it "... it was truly a 'creation"... And most particularly that garden, where there had been before only long grass and wild blackberries... James Inglis, a successful Detroit industrialist, owned the American Blower Company. In 1901 his sister Kate and her husband Frank Smith, had purchased a farm in the "country" near Ann arbor in order to live a simpler life. Kate's niece, Carol Inglis Spicer, remembered her aunt's grapevines strung along Geddes Street as well as the farm's apples and pears and chickens.

In 2011, Inglis formally launched a multi-year initiative to transform Inglis House and adopt a Person-centered care, home-like community. Check out our latest updates about exciting happenings and opportunities around Inglis! For many years, the Inglis Computer Lab has served as residents’ “entrance ramp” not only to the Information Superhighway but to the world beyond Inglis House. More than half of Inglis residents use a computer for e-mail, Internet searches, social networking, art and gaming. The focus of the Inglis Wellness & Rehabilitation Center is to maximize each resident’s level of independence, participation and safety, while helping them to live life to the fullest.

Here, residents are encouraged to be as independent as possible. Inglis focuses on the entire person, not just a medical diagnosis. We work to help residents reach their goals all while receiving the services they need. Inglis is one of a select few residential facilities throughout the United States that offers such highly specialized, long-term care for people with physical disabilities. In addition to providing medical and personal care, a key aspect of serving younger adults is recognizing that they typically have a wider range of needs than a geriatric nursing home resident. Younger adults, whether congenitally disabled or disabled later in life, struggle to achieve goals that give a sense of autonomy, mastery, and creativity.

This imposing residence, near the University of Michigan Arboretum, was built in 1927 for James Inglis as part of an exclusive subdivision on the eastern edge of town. It was situated on the rear acreage of a farmstead that had been in the Inglis family since 1901. It reputedly cost $250,000 to build and was designed to resemble a French Chateau. Nestled away from the bustle of town, the Inglis House today is owned by the University and is used as a guest house and reception center for visiting dignitaries. Person-centeredness empowers residents to make their own decisions about when to get up or go to bed, how to decorate their room, assist in menu planning and participate in household decisions. Terracotta – Terracotta is the undertone of red color, which has a warm effect on the home exterior when blended with a brown roof. The combination gives a vintage-style appearance that looks unique, unlike other colors. Consider climate before deciding the color scheme of the roof and house exterior.

The elements include the brown garage doors, windows, wall planters, and the wood Z-bar board and batten shutters. The combination of a brown roof and any shade of white for the house is never wrong. Both of the tones are neural, and together they create a simple yet gorgeous look. When it comes to elegance and class, dark brown is the timeless option for your exterior home if you’re looking for something to add sophistication.

This color makes an excellent exterior choice for brown roofs due to its neutrality and classic appeal. A brown roof’s natural, earthy aesthetic is the perfect companion for an exterior painted Nacre. This light neutral shade of tan provides subtle coloring that stands out against the darkness of a brown roof. If your shingle appears yellowish or beige next to the white and therefore has warm undertones, Gordon recommends going with a red, orange, or yellow paint color. On the other hand, a roof with cool undertones, which will appear blue or gray next to the white paint, will look best alongside blue, gray, or green. Lodges are popular places for vacations, so it makes sense that the look is popular for home design.

And if you want to introduce this impression right off the bat, applying these shades to the exterior house can do the trick. A brown roof, especially if it’s a darker shade, can absorb more heat from the sun, potentially increasing the home’s cooling costs in warmer months. Yes, brown roofs are good as they require minimal maintenance, offer insulation properties, and help in reducing water runoff.

Brick red is a bold, earthy color that harmonizes beautifully with a brown roof. For a warmer palette, burnt orange or terracotta complements the brown beautifully. To achieve a cohesive exterior, factor in the roof’s shade and surrounding landscape when making your choice. A well-coordinated exterior color scheme can significantly enhance the curb appeal of your home, increase its value, and showcase your unique style. Brown roofs are a lovely sight to behold, with the paleness of tan!

The dark wood roof shingles, paired with an accent of golden wood siding shingles creates an eye-catching look. The rest of the siding can be done in the same golden color, with plank siding instead to keep the interest on specific focal points of the house. Many homeowners are enamored with European styles, especially when it comes to country cottages. European cottage-style homes are unique in their design and appearance, bringing hints of Europe to create a beautiful home.

Here is another example of the pairing between a green home and a brown roof. This design also proves that any shade of green can be a good match for any brown tone. For adding brightness in the exterior color scheme, the second story of this house has tan stucco for the wall. It creates an elegant contrast appearance together with the exposed wall studs and trims. However, if you want a more classic look, something like antique white or off-white is a better choice.

With a brown roof, opt for earth-toned house colors like taupe, beige, or muted olive for a harmonious appearance. Since taupe is already a greyish-brown color, it has brown undertones that are perfect for brown roofs! The subtle contrast between the two shades makes the brown roofs stand out! This scheme looks highly sophisticated with a warm and sober appearance. Moreover, the cream color has yellow undertones that bring a subtle brightness to the exterior, making them one of the best pairings with brown roofs. And this gives an elegant and fresh look, great for modern exteriors.

The 16 Best Cruises to Book in 2023, According to T+L's Expert

top 5 cruise lines

You will want some spare cash to spend on excursions and activities on your cruise. A Caribbean cruise by Royal Caribbean International, on the other hand, offers a completely different experience. Rather than cool temperatures and lush forests, exploring the Caribbean will offer you endless sunny days, beautiful clear blue water, and lush palm trees. Royal Caribbean International’s Western Caribbean Cruise, which leaves and returns from Fort Lauderdale, will have you visiting Grand Cayman, Puerto Costa Maya, and Cozumel. Choosing an Alaskan cruise over a Caribbean one will open your eyes up to staggering natural beauty. You will be awed by the landscape’s unspoiled wilderness, magnificent glaciers, and untouched forests.

Royal Caribbean

However, come 2020, the allure of clinking glasses and poolside sunbathing dissipated into thin air as these luxury watercrafts became hotspots for COVID-19 infestation. Some of the best priced cruises can be found on Norwegian Cruise Lines and Princess Cruises. Norwegian Cruise Lines has affordable cruises like its 7-day Southeast Asia cruise that costs only an average of $837 per person.

Seabourn Cruise Line

Second, purchasing early may qualify you for add-on coverage like “cancel for any reason,” which is typically available only within a specific period (about 15 days) after you book your trip. Themed cruises are cruises where a part of the trip is based on a theme or special interest such as Broadway shows, music, media or even crafts like knitting. Some themes are cruise-wide, while others are group itineraries with exclusive activities. Mediterranean cruises can last anywhere from seven days to two weeks, depending on the company and itinerary. Booking every excursion through the cruise line can add up, but luckily, there are typically more affordable options through third-party companies. As someone who's taken over 50 cruises all over the world, I know firsthand how popular cruising is this year.

The best cruise lines in the world: 2023 Readers' Choice Awards

The innovative vessel, which is similar in design to Scenic Eclipse, will have luxurious suites complete with butler service and all sorts of extras, including helicopters (plural) and a submarine. "We have sailed three times on this ship. The experiences have all been exceptional," said one reader about the 10-year-old Celebrity Reflection, the fifth and largest ship in Celebrity Cruises's award-winning Solstice class. As a mega-ship, the Celebrity Reflection does not do the ice skating rinks, waterparks, and amusement-park attractions found on sister line Royal Caribbean International. Instead, the wows are the sophisticated décor and cuisine, an impressive modern art collection — with Jeff Koons, Robert Rauschenberg, and Kiki Smith among artists represented — and a real grass lawn up on top.

The best cruise lines offer travelers the opportunity to experience some of the world’s finest vacation destinations while enjoying a wide variety of amenities for every member of the family. From pools, waterslides and mini golf for kids to spas, shows and nightclubs for adults, there is something for everyone on a cruise ship. Oceania cruises offer luxury experience at a better value for money than other cruise liners. Its ships conform to the medium size category and travel to destinations all around the world. It is extremely popular among seniors and retirees, partly because it offers extended travel duration which can last up to 195 days! It offers one of the most diverse culinary experiences in the industry, with options ranging from southern Porterhouses, to steamy Callaloo, to delicious Bouillabaisse.

Travelers can engage in amenities such as culinary classes, luxury spas, and destination focused cultural activities. Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated individual cruise ships on their cabins and facilities, food, service, itineraries and destinations, excursions and activities, and value. Those assessments were combined to generate results for the cruise lines in six categories, including river cruising. After deciding on the location you want to see, you will need to decide on the type of cruise you want.

Luxury cruises tend to be smaller, with more staff per guest and more deluxe amenities. Among the amenities, passengers can enjoy upscale accommodations, spas and sauna facilities, water sports equipment and fine dining. It goes without saying that they are significantly more expensive than a mainstream cruise.

Viking Cruises is a river and ocean cruise line that recently added expedition sailings and the Great Lakes trips to its repertoire. "T+L readers rave about the consistency of Viking's vessels and their Scandinavian design," cruise expert Fran Golden reported when Viking once again topped T+L's World's Best Awards last year. Viking came in at No. 1 in T+L's best mid-size ship category and river cruise category. Golden said the WBA Hall of Fame honoree's 50 river "longships" are "light-filled floating boutique hotels."

Best Kids Programs

You could also save money by booking a saver fare offered by some cruise lines. Pioneered by Norwegian Cruise Line, solo traveler cabins are becoming more common across the industry. Whereas for many years solo cabins were usually interior grade, there are now oceanview and even balcony cabins available for solo travelers on some lines. Get the kids set up with one of the on-ship Camp Discovery programs including The Treehouse (3-7), The Lodge (8-12) and The Beach House (13-17). In partnership with Discovery, your kids will have immersive hands-on activities, sports competitions, dance classes, movie nights and science programs. Speaking of Camp at Sea, this entertainment center is home to over 500 activities for kids, including arts and crafts, culinary, sport competitions and STEM-based activities.

Her 2022 cruise on Riviera included 70 excursions "from canoeing Croatia’s Cetina River to cooking classes in Athens." They have both specialty (where kids under 12 can eat for free) and a complimentary buffet where even the pickiest eater of the fam will find something to enjoy. Aside from the buffet and 24-hour spots, newer ships offer the Indulge Food Hall. They are set up like a food market, where you can order from any station and have it all brought right to your seat. It was a great experience trying out new dishes and having a family-style meal. If you’re searching for one of the best cruise lines for families, look no further than Disney Cruise Line.

For those staying in certain room tiers, a concierge team is available to help travelers with special requests and booking excursions. And while Disney cruises primarily cater to families, they aren’t just for kids. The ships offer nightclubs, bars and adult-only pools and dining, too, as well as special activities and clubs for teens. Norwegian Cruise Line has proved it’s the clear leader when it comes to solo travelers.

The tours are usually led by locals, which means the guides can also give you some good recommendations if you have time before you need to return to the ship. Even though it means paying for lodging and likely a few meals before boarding the boat, getting a good night's sleep before a jam-packed vacation is worth it to me. Some ports of call, like Nice, France, were easy to get around, but others like Rome were packed to the gills.

With its endless dedication to kids, Disney Cruise Line breezes to the top of the pack when it comes to the family cruise experience. Larger-than-average staterooms with double-bathrooms, free room service and fountain sodas, and Disney’s spectacular kids facilities and production shows help set the line apart. But Disney doesn’t forget that adults are footing the bill and crafts a memorable experience for them, too. Just refurbished, the 165-cabin Paul Gauguin will be exploring the Pacific in 2023, with trips to the Cook Islands, Fiji, the Marquesas, and the Society Islands. The single-vessel brand was voted the very best small-ship cruise line in the World’s Best Awards 2022, as T+L readers gave particularly high marks to the Paul Gauguin’s on-board staff.

Its cruises are catered toward couples looking for a relaxing and serene vacation. It sails to places like the Galapagos Islands, Bermuda, and Italy, and though it’s pricier than other lines, offers an unforgettable experience. The company won the 2024 silver award for “Best Cruise Line” from the Travvy Awards, and have been featured in several high end publications.

Your dog or cat can be carried on-board (in a kennel) for a charge (on top of your own fare) of between $800 and $1,600, depending on its size and species. No, you can usually go on a cruise without being vaccinated for COVID-19 or other diseases. However, verify each destination's vaccine policies to ensure they have no requirements. Ships also have a living room where guests can gather to talk or relax while listening to classical music performed by resident musicians.

Alaska Cruises: A Cheat Sheet to Planning the Perfect Adventure

how fast does cruise ship travel

Cruise ships also travel at slower speeds for fuel efficiency. So a ship’s speed of 22 knots means it’s traveling at 22 nautical miles per hour. The average large cruise ship speed is 18 to 22 knots (20-25 mph/33-41 kph). Not only do you want to know how fast your ship goes, but you also want to know whether or not it’s safe to board. In fact, some countries have laws regarding maximum speeds which vary depending upon the type of vessel involved.

How Far Can a Cruise Ship Travel in a Day?

And with nearly 2,800 staterooms, the largest ships are just slightly smaller than The Mirage in Las Vegas when it comes to the number of rooms. Remember, daily distance is just one aspect of your cruise experience. Consider factors like destinations, onboard activities, and overall atmosphere when making your decision. These propellor systems turn “screws” instead of long propellors like a plane.

Comparison of Speeds of Different Cruise Ships

The speed of the ship will be adjusted by the captain and his crew depending on the weather conditions and the ocean power that are present. Boat speeds and the amount of time it takes for ships to arrive at harbors would both be decelerated when there are rough seas and heavy gusts. Cruise ships are comparable to enormous naval towns, with the capacity to carry anywhere from 4,000 to 6,000 people. It’s natural to be curious about the speed of cruise ships, given the massive size of these vessels. You can read more about the differences between cruise ships and ocean liners here. How fast a ship is able to sail depends on several factors, including the power of its engines, the weather and the conditions at sea.

Royal Caribbean Blog is your ultimate source for Royal Caribbean coverage.

If you’re traveling to five different ports of call in seven days, the captain must ensure you reach each new port at the specified time. Although it sounds like a fun science experiment, no one these days has to stand on the bow and toss a knotted rope over the side. Modern cruise ships rely on GPS tools to monitor and adjust speed. It’s hard to imagine anything as large and heavy as a cruise ship being able to move — much less glide effortlessly through the water. Cruise ships are modern marvels not just for their size and amenities, but also for their (surprisingly fast) travel speed. If you're traveling on a ship, you may be curious to know the answer to, "how fast do cruise ships go?" Our guide provides the answer.

Alaska Cruises: Everything You Need to Know for a Perfect Bucket-List Adventure

Cruise ships crossing the Gulf of Alaska often slow down to let passengers share close encounters with the magical sea life in the area. Sometimes, ships have to slow down because of unfavorable sea conditions that cause rough water and high waves. At other times, cruise ships slow down for beautiful views of coastal cities and natural attractions such as volcanoes. Just like a car on the highway, higher speeds for ships create aerodynamic drag. Most cruise ships maintain a speed of 21 to 24 knots to avoid aerodynamic drag that could eat up the ship’s fuel supply. Running out of gas in the middle of the ocean is obviously not an option.

Seasick Prone? Beware and Plan Carefully

The standard unit of measurement for speed on cruise liners and other types of naval ships is the knot. Cruise ships time their journeys to dock at ports in the early morning and depart in the evening to allow passengers to explore. If the distance between two ports is too great, the ship will spend a day at sea.

Wooden ships didn’t have nearly the same maximum speeds as modern ships. Though the Queen Mary 2 carries passengers and has many features similar to a cruise ship, like a theater, spa, and nightclub, it’s not exactly a cruise ship. Technically, cruise ships are for pleasure, while ocean liners are for transportation. Officers on the bridge will adjust speed to account for weather and ocean conditions — rough seas and high winds mean slower speeds — and port arrival times. Early arrival into port can come with extra fees that cruise lines are loath to incur, which usually means they prefer to take their time by slowing their speed. A knot is the nautical measure of speed used by cruise ships and other maritime vessels.

Cruise ships do sometimes go faster than the standard speed, such as when there is bad weather that they must quickly move away from. If another ship puts out a distress call, then a cruise ship may also speed up to offer assistance as soon as possible. A nautical mile is 6,076 feet, which is about 15% more than a mile on dry land (which is called a statute mile). But when asking how fast does a cruise ship go, that’ll depend on how far it needs to travel.

First Global Seafood Certification Awarded to Holland America

Temperatures in Alaska can change considerably from one destination to the next. That includes warm days, where even being near a glacier or a passing cloud (or socked-in rain) can make things chilly. If you'd like an assist with your outdoor adventures, the Mount Roberts Tramway climbs 1,800 feet above Juneau for gorgeous views. Those who'd prefer man-made experiences can check out honky-tonk at the raucous Red Dog Saloon or dip into any of the microbreweries and distilleries all over town. Cruises through Alaska's gulf also tend to pass through the Inside Passage, with typical stops including Sitka, Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan.

Its origins are far more literal, according to the United States' National Ocean Service. The movement of the vessel generated friction upon the wood, which, in turn, caused the additional rope to be pushed into the sea over the course of a certain amount of time. When the allotted time had passed, personnel of the crew would draw in the rope and count the knots. The measurement of miles on land dates back to Roman times and is based on 1,000 paces (only counting the left foot). Nautical miles were defined much later, in 1929, and are based on degrees of latitude around the earth. That's especially true of large ships, so consider a small ship for cruising to Alaska, like UnCruise or Silversea, if those glaciers are high on your must-see list.

Keep in mind that this is the average speed, not the fastest speed the ship can travel. There are also a number of factors that impact travel speed, but we’ll get to that in a moment. The number of passengers onboard a cruise ship can also affect its speed.

Their engines produce about 3,500 horsepower each giving them enough energy to propel the ship at a steady pace. Some newer models boast even higher speeds such as those found onboard the Pacific Aria. The average cruising speed for most modern cruise liners is around 14 knots. This means that when traveling under full power, a cruise liner will travel approximately 1 knot faster than what would be considered “normal” or top speed.

how fast does cruise ship travel

To sum it up, the future of cruise ship speed is looking just as bright and promising as the neon dancefloor on the disco night of your cruise. We’re almost at the end of our discussion about cruise ship speed. Let’s round things out with a quick FAQ session to recap what we’ve learned. In the post-war years of World War II, many ocean liners were competing to cross the Atlantic in the shortest amount of time. A passenger onboard may have a medical emergency and need transportation to the nearest hospital. Or perhaps another ship in the area sends out a distress signal and your cruise ship is the closest vessel that can help.

They tend to have a longer, pointed bow that helps them navigate high rising ocean waves. They also have an extra thick hull to maintain stability in rough conditions. Sometimes, the Captain will even slow a ship down to everyone can see a sunset or other passing scenery.

In addition, there are several shops where you can purchase souvenirs and gifts. As well, the ship you sail can move much faster than most people realize — especially given their massive size. If you’ve ever wondered how fast cruise ships can go when they are at sea, you might be surprised how quick they can move. With ships continuing to get built larger and larger, it can be hard to imagine that cruise ships can sail at even faster speeds. Britannia deck plan

cruise ship britannia

The Britannia ship is the eighth vessel to join P&O UK's fleet and named "to resonate with the forward-looking mood in Britain". Britannia is considered to be the most fitting name because of its famous long heritage, so suitable for the newest P&O addition – the favourite cruise line of Britain. Note that even though this ship is family friendly and has a more relaxed vibe -- formal still means full black tie in the public rooms. Britannia might break many of P&O Cruises' traditions, but dress code still rules -- and that also applies to older children. During your time on board, you’ll see our friendly photographers at key events and in scenic spots around the ship. This is your chance to capture a moment and make it last for a lifetime, so don’t be shy – gather your loved ones and ask for a photo.

Typically on P&O Cruises, passengers choose to dress very formally with black being the overriding choice for many. Tracksuits, sports wear and trainers are not permitted in the evenings. If you are cruising in the Caribbean, tailored shorts can be worn in the buffet. The good news is that the launderettes found on the cabin decks are free to use, all you need is washing tablets.

Another stunning island and without doubt one of my favourites is St Kitts (Shh don’t tell the others). It’s another port that required you to be on an organised tour or take a licensed taxi to and from the port. There is so much to explore on St Kitts, but I decided to get active and did Nature Kayaking. The bonus part was this also included snorkelling which was the best part.

While the Britannia ship may be a large vessel, every inch of the interior was carefully considered as to become breathtaking and striking. MV Britannia was designed to make guests feel special, and all of her was planned with flair and imagination. The Britannia ship offers the very best of Britain's contemporary design and an unprecedented number of facilities for passengers. Britannia has the most popular features of the P&O fleet, such as The Crow's Nest Bar, Atul Kochar's Sindhu restaurant, Olly Smith's The Glass House, as well as brand new amenities. P&O says that Britannia cruise ship engine power output (MAN diesel engines) is equivalent to 70 Challenger tanks’ power or 86 supercars Bugatti Veyron. Britannia cruise ship is also the greenest yet and designed to deliver greater levels of environmental and operational efficiency.

P&O UK's winter 2025-2026 cruise collection includes 12 new ports

Mine was at the start, and if you want a relaxing day head to the Boatyard. It’s within walking distance of the ship and for $30 you can use their inflatables, rope swing, free Wi-Fi and snorkel with turtles. This article will run you through my experience on a two-week cruise on Britannia. I’ll talk through the islands, what I did, what other options you have and my thoughts on the islands. With her luminous glass-roofed SkyDome, on-board gin distillery and whole world of dining and entertainment on board. Tea and coffee is free of charge on P&O Britannia except specialty teas and coffees from Costa Coffee.

Britannia departed the Fincantieri ship yard on 27 February 2015 for Southampton via Gibraltar. Britannia was officially named on 10 March 2015 by Queen Elizabeth II at the Ocean Terminal. Alcohol over the 1 litre limit will be stored and returned to the guest before the end of the cruise. The bar isn’t open all day but in the evening it turns into a sophisticated piano bar for after-dinner drinks. On Deck 7 aft, the Live Lounge is an entertainment venue that offers live music and doubles as the ship’s nightclub. There are four grades of suite on Britannia and are located forward, mid-ship and in the aft.

If neither of these are for you then the tours that tempted me were the Snorkel, beach and RIB experience. And anything that took to the water, as the island looks beautiful from the ocean. There are plenty of good tours available on St Lucia, but I really recommend anything that include the Pitons, as they are such a spectacular sight. If you don’t fancy them anything that includes the rainforest of plantations are also a great bet. If you don’t want to head to the beach, there are plenty of Shore Experiences in Barbados. These include a sunset cruise, a 4×4 adventure, the best of Barbados and of course beach hopping.

It was busy and honestly not worth it; however, the trip north was made worthwhile by my stop at Hadicurari Beach, a stunning kitesurfing spot on the West Coast. I then headed south to a hidden gem of a beach called Mangel Halto (a nice insider tip I got). It’s small and you can find your own private beach hidden in the mangroves, if you’re looking for a secluded beach escape, I’d recommend taking a taxi here.

Balconies with fully obstructed views (by lifeboats) are located midship on Deck 8. These are numbers G310-G308, G314-G325, G330-G402, G442-G504, G510-G517, G522-G535, G603-G615, G618-G627. On MS Britannia, P&O also introduced a try-before-you-buy program with consultant-managing tasting tables in the ship's beauty and make-up areas.

Once you’re in the dock you meet your tour and stay in that tour “bubble”. Our second port was the island of Aruba, and like Curaçao it’s another Dutch territory close to Venezuela. I’d heard mixed reviews about Aruba so as I’d just done an island experience tour I decided to go it alone and rent a car.

The tour started with snorkelling with turtles at Playa Grandi on the northwest of the island. After that we went to the caves and viewpoint of Shete Boka Park, followed by Playa Kenepa; one of many stunning beaches on the West Coast. I picked an island explorer tour, which was a whistle-stop tour of the island.

I don’t think an island highlights trip would be brilliant here, and the UTV did look fun however keep in mind you very much follow other UTVs in a line and don’t go off-road much. I then hightailed it to the East of the island for two more stops. The first was the Natural Bridge and the second Bushiribana Ruins. I was more impressed by the ruins, and these were popular spots for the UTV tours.

It will be stored safely for you and returned by the final evening of your cruise. Many men decide to wear a dinner jacket and bow tie but don’t be put off by this. I’m sure that when you’re planning your cruise on Britannia, laundry services are furthest from your mind but it’s useful information to know, especially for longer cruises. It’s important to note that drinks packages cannot be shared and therefore, P&O Cruises will not allow just one person sharing a cabin to buy a drinks package. A drinks package may be worth purchasing for your Britannia cruise but be aware that drinks packages are not available to purchase on short cruises. On some occasions, this venue was completely empty and we popped in to get a quick drink at the bar.

Weekend Cruise Entertainment

Weekend cruises have been growing in popularity over the past few years. In the old days, cruise lines mostly offered 7 day or longer itineraries. While some short cruises were available, they were usually on older ships that hadn’t been updated in years without much to do onboard.

Night Western Caribbean CruiseDetails

By the third day, we became pretty acquainted with the party atmosphere onboard. It was nice to feel like we didn’t need to impress anyone - certainly, no one was judging what we were wearing or how we looked. Here’s an overview of my experience onboard a weekend Carnival cruise. On the entertainment side of things, Carnival Liberty features two of our best, live on stage. First there's Playlist Productions™, where pros sing and dance their hearts out, performing high-energy themed revues of tunes you know, backed by amazing visual effects.

Don't miss the Venetian Toast, where the ship’s captain greets guests and crew don Venetian masks. Carnival, Disney and Royal Caribbean also take care of West Coast folks with three-night sailings from southern California (Long Beach, Los Angeles and San Diego) to Ensenada, Mexico. When we boarded the ship, we learned pretty quickly that most of our preconceived notions were fairly accurate. While it wasn’t as crazy as I had anticipated in my mind, the energy onboard was off the charts. Although an older crowd can be slower-paced, at least they are very quiet and considerate onboard. By the last morning, I had to sleep with earplugs if I had any hope of feeling rested in the morning.

It’s nice to not have so much time, where I just constantly look at deck plans, dining menus, and excursion lists to plan what I’ll do. The Carnival Sunrise technically debuted in 2019, but in reality, the ship was in service before as the Carnival Triumph. It went through a $200 million dollar retrofit that was so extensive, Carnival saw fit to rename the ship.

Port Canaveral (Orlando), FL

Carnival Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean all offer three-night Bahamas cruises from Florida to Nassau and/or the line's private island. Departure ports include Miami, Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale. It also seems like similar events on other cruise lines are normally held late on other cruise lines. If you want to find fun music or go to the silent disco party, you will have to stay up pretty late. The earlier slots are reserved to appeal to the older cruisers and they assume the younger ones will stay up late. But, people only had four days to dance and drink their vacation away, so they weren’t wasting any time.

With 27 ships and hundreds of itineraries, there’s a Carnival cruise for everyone. These short trips are also a great way to rack up points toward elite status on your favorite cruise line, especially if you book a suite that earns you extra points. Weekend cruises have many benefits, the obvious one being they do not require missing much school or work. They're more affordable than a longer cruise, so they can be great for folks on a budget.

Carnival Panorama is smaller than today's mega-ships, but it packs a ton of fun into its 15 decks. Rooms are spacious; some come with exclusive perks like access to the Havana Pool area or unlimited use of the spa’s thermal suites. Kids will also love that there’s an onboard waterpark, kids club, and a Build-a-Bear Workshop at Sea. Carnival Luminosa (formerly the Costa Luminosa) is for you if you want to sail to destinations like Alaska and Australia.

However, the culture is shifting, with younger workers not wanting to dedicate a whole week of valuable vacation days to one trip. Instead, they prefer multiple, shorter vacations over the weekend. Royal Caribbean took the lead in observing this trend and changing their offerings. They started offering a variety of 3, 4, and 5-night cruises on some of their recently “amplified,” their word for updated, ships. These ships have everything the “stars” of their fleet have; the newest restaurants, bars, attractions like the Flow Rider, etc. What could be better than setting sail for a Memorial Day cruise from New York, the quintessential American city?

Aside from the main pool, which is the hub of much of the line's fun activities, almost every Carnival cruise ship also has at least one waterslide, with several having multi-slide water parks. Carnival specializes in fun, laid-back, family-friendly cruises. You’ve come to the right place, and your timing is right on— just like your impeccable sense of adventure! Book early and start taking your pick of the best dates, most in-demand excursions, comfiest staterooms and dreamiest destinations.

And because the ship is so small, it's easy to navigate, and I always end up making friends with the delightful crew onboard. For those sailing from Miami, The Bahamas are just a short cruise away. Once our ship lands, guests can partake in a variety of attractions and activities in this tropical destination. Visitors can choose from a variety of things to do, from luxury sailing to swimming with dolphins. Of course, these are just a few of the wonderful options during a Memorial Day cruise.

If you're looking to hop a ship for a few nights, you can't just sail from anywhere to anywhere. Ships need to call in another country before heading back – which limits where you can sail on a weekend cruise. A little research revealed that this cruise was on the oldest ship in Carnival’s fleet. To my surprise, Carnival Ecstasy would be retiring and heading to the scrapyard in just a few months.

Finally, weekend cruising is a great way to get out of my day-to-day life and escape reality for a bit. Vacation really is a state of mind and sailing away from the stress of daily life is a perfect way for me to reset. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love a week-long cruise to really disconnect and get away. I even love night cruises for grand adventures, which allows me to see multiple countries without ever having to re-pack my suitcase. Sail away for a short two, three, or four day vacation on a cruise. It’s affordable, won’t cut into your workload and planning a short cruise makes you the hero of your family.

My favorite spot to hang out was the aft Patio Pool because it wasn't ever super crowded, and the view of the ocean was unmatched. If you need to fly or drive many hours to your departure port, you're looking at more of a long weekend with a day or two of time off from work required. However, if you have a flexible schedule or work off hours, a weekend cruise is definitely doable.
